We were married on the 31st of January, 2015. Getting on the plane to go to our honeymoon marked the first flight of 34 planes we would get on, and arriving in St. Lucia marked the first out of 5 countries we would visit outside of the U.S. that year. The assumption that we would settle down and just be married for a while never really played out. In fact, 2015 was the most exciting and adventurous year of our lives so far. In interest of time, I am just going to give some highlights:
Lindsay in Costa Rica: she was finally here and the house became ours…meaning she had Bradyn and I move a couch 5 different times, decorated everything, and suddenly exponentially more people were coming through our door. Insert blog theme here* because this was defining for our marriage. Lindsay has an innate desire and ability to open the door and bring people into life, and love, and a sense of home. She began to learn Spanish in order to invite more people in. She welcomed a friend of ours who’s house was broken into. She hosted Young Life clubs and Bible studies all within weeks of arrival. Our door was now officially opened whether I liked it or not. Turns out, I like it too.
Return to Kenya: after praying via email with a local Kenyan pastor I knew well from my time in Kenya, and dreaming of building a church together, and Lindsay being a part of the picture, we finally got the news that our Costa Rican friends named Boo and Sha were going to come with us to Kenya. In 2 months’ time we gathered a team of 12 and went to Kenya. Bradyn and Jackie, recently married, actually met us in Nairobi from their honeymoon, while my Dad and Lindsay’s brother were also a part of the team. God was so kind to allow us to build a new church, see old friends, make new ones, and celebrate a place very special to our relationship with each other and with Him. This was the first of what is now an annual trip to Kenya with the Pro2G Mission. Lindsay made me promise I would take her back to Kenya one day. Pssshhh, did it in less than 4 months of marriage!
Dominican Republic Family camp: the Pro2G Mission was invited to be a part of Young Life’s first international family camp. We served on the work crew and kid’s club for over 20 families who came from the States. Together with the national staff from the Dominican and directors from several other Latin American countries, we were able to see the Lord break barriers and strengthen families while showing the glorious scope of his love in Latin America.
Holidays: Lindsay’s immediate family all came to visit for Thanksgiving in Costa Rica. We were blessed to share with them our community and life here. We also spent 3 amazing days in Dominical, celebrating Thanksgiving by surfing, jumping from waterfalls, zip-lining, and watching the sun set over the Pacific. It’s one thing to tell loved ones about life here, it’s another to show them, and it’s even more to involve them. We feel an overwhelming sense of joy by the involvement of our family in our life and work around the world. Lindsay and I also went to the States for Christmas at lake Brownwood with my Mom’s side of the family, while visiting other friends and family during our stay.
2015 was unbelievable.
We are so thankful to have seen the Lord move and to have felt His presence.
